Mystik Dan wins historic Kentucky Derby in three-way photo finish

In the 150th edition of the Grade 1, $5 million Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan clinched victory in a thrilling three-way photo finish against Sierra Leone and Forever Young.

Trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., Mystik Dan’s win marked the first Oaks-Derby double since 1952.

McPeek and Hernandez had also triumphed in the Kentucky Oaks with Thorpedo Anna the previous evening.

The last jockey-trainer duo to achieve this feat was Calvin Borel in 2009, the Lexington-Herald Leader has reported.

However, the victory wasn’t immediately clear due to a significant delay while sorting out the photo finish, the first three-horse photo finish since 1947.

Ultimately, Mystik Dan prevailed, crossing the finish line in a winning time of 2:03.34, with Sierra Leone in second and Forever Young in third by a nose margin.
