US announces military exercise in Guyana and Venezuela responds: “Threat to regional peace”

The US embassy in Guyana announced military exercises in the country, prompting a response from Venezuela, citing it as a threat to regional peace.

The tension stems from the disputed territory of Essequibo, exacerbated by recent oil discoveries and concessions made to ExxonMobil by Guyana.

Venezuela held a referendum supporting the incorporation of Essequibo, intensifying diplomatic tensions.

Guyana accuses Venezuela of expansionist intentions, while Venezuela accuses Guyana of serving ExxonMobil’s interests, the People’s Dispatch has reported.

Despite meetings between the presidents of both countries, the dispute remains unresolved, with Guyana advocating for ICJ arbitration, which Venezuela rejects.
