Meloni, Le Pen hint at combining EU right wing forces

Marine Le Pen and Giorgia Meloni, prominent figures in Europe’s far-right, are hinting at a potential alliance following the upcoming EU elections, as Le Pen’s French party announced a split from its radical German ally AfD.

This move could reshape nationalist party alliances in the European Parliament after the June 6-9 elections, where far-right groups are projected to gain around 37 percent of seats.

Le Pen’s declaration at a far-right rally in Madrid emphasized unity for the elections, while Meloni expressed a desire to replicate her party’s success at home on a European scale.

The rift between Le Pen’s RN and AfD widened after controversial remarks from AfD’s lead EU candidate, prompting the RN to sever ties, the AFP reported.

While RN and AfD belong to the extreme-right ID EU parliament group, Meloni’s Brothers of Italy align with the far-right ECR.

Hungary’s Fidesz, led by Viktor Orban, constitutes another hard-right force. However, analysts note significant ideological divisions among these far-right factions in the European Parliament.
