On Wednesday, Norway, Ireland, and Spain announced their recognition of a Palestinian state, a historic move that was celebrated by Palestinians and condemned by Israel.
In response, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Norway and Ireland and was considering doing the same with its ambassador to Spain.
The recognition will officially take effect on May 28, as confirmed by Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, CBS News has reported.
The announcements began with Norway, whose Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that peace in the Middle East requires recognition of a Palestinian state and expressed support for the Arab peace plan.
This decision follows similar indications from other European Union countries, advocating for a two-state solution as essential for lasting peace.
The move may prompt further recognitions within the EU and additional steps at the United Nations, potentially increasing Israel’s isolation.
