British supermarket Tesco is laser-tattooing avocados to cut plastic pollution

Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, is experimenting with a novel approach to reduce plastic usage by laser-printing barcodes and product details directly onto items.

Initially, the trial is focused on avocados, a popular item in the UK, especially among millennials who enjoy avocado on toast.

Tesco sells approximately 70 million avocados annually, with a 15% increase in sales over the past year.

The trial, currently limited to around 270 stores in southeast England, could potentially eliminate the need for a million plastic stickers if expanded nationwide, Fortune reported.

Additionally, Tesco is testing cardboard alternatives to replace plastic trays for avocado multi-packs as part of the same trial conducted with supplier Westfalia Fruit.
