USC student accused of fatally stabbing suspected car burglar near campus

A 19-year-old University of Southern California (USC) student, Ivan Gallegos, was jailed on Tuesday for allegedly murdering a man suspected of breaking into cars near campus.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday.

The incident occurred in the 700 block of West 28th Street, close to USC’s University Park campus and Greek Row.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Gallegos confronted and fatally stabbed the victim, who was breaking into vehicles.

The victim’s identity is still being determined, NBC News has reported.

Gallegos, a junior studying business administration, was booked into the LAPD’s 77th Street Division jail early Tuesday and is being held on $2 million bail, pending formal charges.
