As Russian forces continue their offensive, Ukraine’s military is urgently trying to rebuild its war-weary forces through a large-scale mobilization campaign supported by new laws.
While many Ukrainian men have volunteered, others have attempted to evade conscription. Even before the current mobilization, thousands fled the country, some even swimming across a river to Romania.
Now, officers are combing cities to draft men aged 25 to 60, prompting many, like Vladyslav, to go into hiding, fearing that conscription means immediate deployment to the front lines.
Military analysts confirm that Ukrainian troops often lack sufficient training, complicating efforts to maintain defensive lines, DNYUZ has reported.
Since the war’s start, the draft has been disorganized and affected by corruption, with no lottery system in place.
The government has used methods like randomly issuing draft notices in apartments and on streets, and ignoring these notices is illegal.
