Federal agents search multiple Oakland locations, including mayor’s home

Federal agents executed search warrants at Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s residence and several properties linked to individuals associated with a recycling company contracted by the city.

The searches, part of a broader operation involving agencies like the FBI, IRS, and United States Postal Inspection Service, occurred on Thursday morning.

The mayor’s office acknowledged the presence of FBI agents at her home but directed inquiries to the agency.

The reasons for the warrants and the specific targets of the investigation remain unclear.

Witnesses reported FBI activity at the mayor’s residence early in the morning, noting the presence of someone believed to be her boyfriend, NBC BayArea has reported.

Following extensive searches, authorities were seen removing multiple boxes and bins from the premises.

Civil rights attorney Dan Siegel emphasized that the searches do not imply any wrongdoing by the mayor herself and could be related to investigating misconduct by others.

Amidst the scrutiny, calls for Thao’s resignation have intensified.
