Former chief of staff for Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao alleges pay-to-play schemes

A former chief of staff for Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has called for her resignation following an FBI raid at Thao’s home, despite the FBI not linking Thao to any wrongdoing.

Renia Webb, who has accused Thao and her boyfriend Andre Jones of pay-to-play schemes, was Thao’s close associate and chief of staff when Thao was a councilmember.

Webb, who led Thao’s mayoral campaign and transition team, resigned in late 2022 and has reported her allegations to the city council and Public Ethics Commission, though her claims were not substantiated.

Webb asserts that Jones promised jobs and appointments in exchange for support, and Thao ignored these accusations, CBS News has reported.

The FBI interviewed Webb regarding Thao’s campaign funding, but the agency has not specified the focus of their investigation.

Thao’s attorney suggests she is not the target, but the Oakland NAACP has also called for her resignation.
