Australian authorities found the remains of a 12-year-old girl on Thursday, who was reportedly snatched by a crocodile while swimming in a creek.
The nearly two-day search involved land, air, and water efforts.
Her remains were discovered near the river where she went missing, in the Indigenous community of Palumpa, southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Police Senior Sgt. Erica Gibson confirmed the girl’s injuries were from a crocodile attack and described the recovery as gruesome and devastating, the New York Post has reported.
The family is in extreme shock and disbelief. Saltwater crocodiles, known to be territorial, pose a general risk in the Northern Territory, which has seen a rise in large crocodile populations since conservation efforts began in the 1970s.
These crocodiles can grow up to 23 feet long and live up to 70 years. The search for the crocodile responsible is still underway.
