3rd hiker dies in Grand Canyon in last 3 weeks

A 50-year-old man from San Angelo, Texas, died while hiking in the Grand Canyon after being found unresponsive on the Bright Angel Trail, about 100 feet from the trailhead.

Bystanders and emergency personnel attempted CPR, but resuscitation efforts failed. The hiker had been attempting to reach the rim after staying overnight at Havasupai Gardens.

This marks the third death in the Grand Canyon in the past three weeks.

Previous incidents include a 41-year-old man found unresponsive on the Bright Angel Trail on June 16, who also could not be revived, and a 69-year-old hiker, Scott Sims from Austin, Texas, who was found semi-responsive on the River Trail on July 1 and later died despite resuscitation efforts.

Sims had been trying to reach Phantom Ranch.

The National Park Service (NPS) is investigating these incidents, ABC News has reported.

They warned that temperatures on exposed parts of the trail can exceed 120 degrees in the shade and advised against hiking in the inner canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. due to extreme heat.

The NPS also mentioned that rescue efforts might be delayed during summer due to limited staff, high call volumes, safety requirements, and limited helicopter availability during extreme heat or bad weather.
