A Moscow court has ordered the arrest in absentia of Yulia Navalnaya, widow of late Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, her spokesperson Kira Yarmysh announced on Tuesday.
The Basmanny District Court accused Navalnaya of participating in an extremist organization and placed her on an international wanted list, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
The court’s decision followed a request by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, stating her detention period would start upon her extradition or detention in Russia.
Navalnaya currently resides outside Russia, CNN has reported.
Alexey Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, died on February 16 in a Siberian penal colony while serving a 19-year sentence for creating an extremist community, financing extremist activities, and other charges.
He was already serving an 11-and-a-half-year sentence on fraud and other charges he denied, claiming they were politically motivated.
Navalny’s death occurred weeks before Russia’s presidential elections, set for March 15, which are expected to secure Putin a fifth term.
