1 dead, 2 remain missing after helicopter crashes into ocean in Hawaii

A helicopter carrying three people crashed into the waters off Kauai, Hawaii, on Thursday, leaving one person dead and two others missing, according to state officials.

The crash occurred about a quarter mile offshore near the Hanakoa Valley along the Na Pali Coast, involving a helicopter from Ali’i Kaua’i Air Tours and Charters.

The Coast Guard and multiple local agencies continue to search for the two missing individuals.

The incident was reported at 1:20 p.m. local time after hikers along the Kalalau Trail witnessed the crash and alerted authorities.

A temporary flight restriction has been put in place by the Federal Aviation Agency as the search operation continues. The helicopter involved was identified as a Robinson R44, ABC News reported.

Kauai Police Chief Todd Raybuck expressed condolences to the affected families and assured continued efforts in search and recovery operations.

The Federal Aviation Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation, with the NTSB leading the effort.
