Mexico ‘cancels’ Poseidon statue after dispute with local deity

In Mexico, a 10-foot-tall statue of Poseidon, erected in May off the coast of Progreso, Yucatan, has been ordered closed by environmental authorities for lacking proper permits.

The statue, depicting an angry, trident-wielding Poseidon rising from the sea, had become a popular spot for tourist photos.

However, it faced criticism from activist lawyers who argued that it offended local Maya Indigenous groups, who honor their own water god, Chaac, the Associated Press has reported.

This controversy, blending modern social issues, legal battles, and social media, saw Mexican social media users humorously declaring “Chaac 1, Poseidon 0.”

The statue may be removed entirely as debates continue.
