Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez guilty on all charges in federal corruption trial

Senator Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and his associates Fred Daibes and Wael Hana were found guilty on all charges in a federal corruption trial after a nine-week proceedings in Manhattan.

Menendez, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted on 16 counts for accepting bribes in exchange for political favors, exposing him to a potential sentence of over 200 years, though such a lengthy sentence is unlikely.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 29.

Despite the conviction, Menendez condemned the verdict and refused to resign, stating he never violated his oath.

His attorneys plan to appeal the decision, Fox News has reported.

U.S. Attorney Damien Williams called the case “shocking levels of corruption,” while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy both urged Menendez to resign in light of the verdict.

Prosecutors presented evidence, including emails and texts, demonstrating that Menendez accepted over $100,000 in gifts, including gold bars and large sums of cash hidden in his home.
