At least five people were killed and many injured across Bangladesh on Tuesday during clashes between young government supporters, police, and students protesting a government job quota system.

Tens of thousands of students participated in the nationwide protests, which marked the first significant opposition to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government since her fourth term began in January.

The protesters are demanding changes to the public sector job quotas, including a 30% quota for relatives of 1971 War of Independence freedom fighters, amid high youth unemployment.

Riot police were deployed to university campuses to control the unrest. In Rangpur, the protests turned violent, leading police to use rubber bullets and tear gas, CNN has reported.

One student died after being taken to the hospital, although the cause of death was unclear. In Dhaka, heavy police presence was reported around the Dhaka University campus, where one student was found dead.

Three more people, including two students, were killed in Chittagong, although local police denied using force.

The Border Guard Bangladesh paramilitary force was deployed nationwide to maintain security as clashes continued.
