Man bitten by shark while spearfishing in the Florida Keys

A man is recovering after being bitten by a shark while spearfishing off Key West, Florida, on Monday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was bitten on the leg and was airlifted to a Miami hospital, where he was alert and responsive. His condition at the time of the news release was unclear.

Several shark bites have been reported in Texas and Florida since the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Shark activity in Florida waters peaks between April and October, but shark bites remain rare.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that humans are 30 times more likely to be struck by lightning in Florida than to be bitten by a shark, CNN has reported.

The recent increase in shark bites is attributed to more human visitors rather than an increase in shark populations.

Despite the low risk, Florida leads the US in unprovoked shark bites annually, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s shark attack report.
