Cold case arrest made in Florida woman’s killing nearly 25 years later

Police in Florida have arrested a man for the 1999 murder of Sherry Holtz, closing the nearly 25-year-old case. Holtz, 50, was found dead in a wooded area in Sanford, Florida, on December 4, 1999.

Her body, discovered by a person collecting cans, showed signs of blunt-force trauma, strangulation, sexual battery, and had her throat cut.

A bloody lock-blade knife was found nearby but initial DNA testing was inconclusive.

The case was reopened in May 2023, and further testing revealed the blood on the knife belonged to Holtz, with additional DNA matching her longtime boyfriend, Gary Durrance, NBC News has reported.

Durrance was arrested Thursday in Volusia County and charged with second-degree homicide.
