Fast-moving wildfire in the Canadian Rockies ravages the picturesque resort town of Jasper

A fast-moving wildfire in the Canadian Rockies forced 25,000 people to evacuate, devastating nearly half of Jasper overnight.

Flames higher than treetops caused extensive damage, though no injuries were reported due to the earlier evacuation.

Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland expressed deep sympathy for the community, acknowledging the destruction.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith estimated 30% to 50% of structures were damaged or destroyed, highlighting the significant rebuild ahead.

Smith, emotional about Jasper’s beauty and popularity, pledged government support for rebuilding, the Associated Press has reported.

Parks Canada confirmed the protection of critical infrastructure, with most damage concentrated on the west side of town.

The fires threatened Jasper and its national park from both the north and south, prompting a swift evacuation of 5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors.
