Police in Nigeria are on high alert and may seek military assistance after protests turned violent in several cities, resulting in at least three deaths, according to the inspector general of police.
Amnesty International’s Nigeria director, Isa Sanusi, reported a higher death toll of 14, based on independent verification from witnesses, victims’ families, and lawyers.
While major cities like Abuja and Kano saw clashes and looting on Thursday, they appeared calm early Friday, though more protests were anticipated, The Irish Times has reported.
Police have fully mobilized and are prepared to respond quickly to any further threats to public safety.
