Pot overflowing with gold coins discovered in ancient Greek city in Turkey

Archaeologists have unearthed a pot of ancient Greek coins in Notion, Turkey, believed to date back to the fifth century B.C.

The gold coins, featuring a kneeling archer design of the Persian daric, were likely minted in Sardis and found beneath a home.

Researchers think mercenaries buried the treasure, though the reason remains unclear.

The discovery, led by the University of Michigan, is rare and significant for understanding the sequence of historical events, Live Science has reported.

The coins provide a firm date that helps anchor the chronology of the period, offering insights into the city’s tumultuous history under Persian and Athenian control.
