Russia has revealed new details about its ground-based laser weapon system, Peresvet, in the latest issue of “Army Digest.”
Designed to protect important areas and assets from enemy reconnaissance satellites, Peresvet uses powerful laser beams to neutralize satellites at altitudes of 200 to 1,100 kilometers.
The system offers 360-degree coverage and can engage targets within a 21 to 155-degree elevation angle.
Its primary mission is to obscure the maneuvering of mobile ground missile complexes, enhancing Russia’s strategic defense by concealing critical military movements, the Defense Blog has reported.
Peresvet was first equipped by the Russian Armed Forces in 2017, began experimental combat duty in December 2018, and officially entered service in December 2019.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed its deployment with five Strategic Missile Forces divisions.
