Two special prosecutors announced plans to charge former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody with obstruction of justice following a police raid on the Marion County Record newspaper last year.
The prosecutors found that the newspaper staff committed no crimes and that the police search warrants were based on inaccurate information.
Body camera footage from the raid showed Publisher Eric Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, Joan Meyer, distressed; she died of a heart attack the next day.
Cody resigned in October and is accused of obstructing an official process post-raid, the Associated Press has reported.
The raid has sparked national debate over press freedom. The newspaper’s parent company and staff have filed federal lawsuits against local officials.
