Myanmar’s junta has lost contact with senior officers at a major military base near the Chinese border after rebels claimed control of the regional army headquarters.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) posted photos of its troops at the Lashio base, following intense fighting.
Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun confirmed the loss of contact and the possible capture of senior officials.
This marks a significant defeat for the junta, under pressure since a 2021 coup sparked an armed rebellion.
The MNDAA’s capture of Lashio, the first regional military command to fall, highlights the military’s weakening position, NBC News has reported.
Rebel groups along the Thai and Indian borders expressed solidarity and vowed to continue their fight against the military.
