A Pakistani man, Asif Merchant, with alleged ties to Iran, plotted to hire hitmen to assassinate former President Donald Trump and other U.S. politicians, according to a federal criminal complaint.
Merchant, 46, planned the assassinations in New York City and paid $5,000 in advance to undercover officers posing as contract killers.
He met with them in June and was arrested in July while preparing to leave the U.S. Merchant revealed he had families in both Iran and Pakistan, and one of his homes is in Tehran, the New York Post has reported.
The plot led the Secret Service to enhance Trump’s security. This Iranian-linked plot is separate from another recent assassination attempt on Trump.
