Hurricane Ernesto hit Puerto Rico with heavy rain, causing widespread power outages for nearly half of the island’s residents.
The storm, which is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane, is now heading toward Bermuda. Puerto Rico experienced significant flooding, road blockages, and the cancellation of over 140 flights.
Power outages affected over 640,000 people, with 23 hospitals relying on generators.
As Ernesto moves northwest, Bermuda has issued a hurricane watch, and forecasters warn of dangerous swells along the U.S. East Coast, the Associated Press has reported.
Ernesto is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is predicted to be above average due to record warm ocean temperatures.
