A worker at a remote radar station on Brevoort Island, Nunavut, was killed by two polar bears in the Canadian Arctic, according to the facility’s operator, Nasittuq Corp.
The incident occurred on Thursday, but the victim’s name has not been released. Nasittuq expressed condolences and is providing support to the victim’s family and affected employees.
Polar bear attacks are extremely rare, and an investigation is underway in collaboration with local authorities. The status of the bears remains unclear.
Canada is home to around two-thirds of the global polar bear population, which is protected under various wildlife acts, NBC News has reported.
This tragic event follows a similar polar bear attack in Alaska last year.
