Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for the Senate, setting up a crucial race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
Hovde, backed by former President Trump, easily defeated his primary opponents, while Baldwin ran unopposed.
Baldwin’s seat is a key target in the fight for Senate control, and she has built a strong campaign, particularly in rural areas.
Hovde, who previously ran for the Senate in 2012, has invested heavily in his campaign but still trails Baldwin financially, NBC News has reported.
The two candidates have already begun exchanging sharp attacks as they head into the general election.
