New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy plans to appoint George Helmy, his former chief of staff, to replace Senator Bob Menendez in the U.S.
Senate after Menendez steps down later this month due to federal corruption convictions.
Helmy, currently an executive at RWJBarnabas Health, will serve the remainder of Menendez’s term, which ends in early 2025.
The official announcement is expected soon.
New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim, the Democratic nominee, is the frontrunner for the 2024 Senate race, CNN has reported.
Menendez, who was convicted of multiple charges, faces sentencing on October 29. His resignation is effective August 20.
