Volcano erupts in Russia after 7.0-mag quake, sending ash column 5 miles high

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s east coast triggered an eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, sending an ash column 5 miles into the air.

The volcano is located 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Kamchatka region.

Despite the significant seismic activity, there are no reports of injuries or major damage, though buildings are being inspected, CNN has reported.

No tsunami warnings were issued by Russian authorities, although the US Tsunami Warning System had initially cautioned about possible hazardous waves.
