A top-ranking election official in Venezuela, Juan Carlos Delpino, has openly criticized the results of July’s disputed presidential election, stating that there is no evidence President Nicolás Maduro won.
Delpino, who is part of the national electoral committee and aligned with the opposition, emphasized transparency in his statement.
Despite growing international demands for vote transparency, the Maduro-controlled Supreme Court declared Maduro the winner.
As global criticism mounts, more sanctions may be imposed, though the effectiveness of past sanctions is debated, Semafor has reported.
Diplomatic efforts to mediate the crisis have so far failed, and concerns about a new wave of emigration from Venezuela continue to rise amid the ongoing economic and political turmoil.
