Parenting Is Hazardous to Your Health, the Surgeon General Warns

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a warning that parenting can have harmful effects on mental health due to high stress levels faced by mothers and fathers.

In his advisory, Murthy, a father of two, described parenting as both the “toughest and most rewarding” job, noting that 41% of parents report feeling too stressed to function, with 48% feeling overwhelmed compared to other adults.

He highlighted modern challenges such as social media, a youth mental health crisis, and loneliness.

Murthy called for policy changes and community support, including paid leave, affordable childcare, and mental health resources, while urging cultural shifts to help parents openly discuss their struggles, The Hill has reported.

He emphasized that raising children is vital work that should be valued and supported by society.
