Loran Cole, 57, was executed by lethal injection on Thursday at Florida State Prison for the 1994 murder of 18-year-old Florida State University student John Edwards and the sexual assault of Edwards’ sister during a camping trip in Ocala National Forest.

Cole’s execution, Florida’s first of the year and the 13th in the nation, occurred at 6:15 p.m. with witnesses including guards, journalists, and corrections staff.

Cole, who had no final words, spent his last hours with his son and a friend, eating pizza, M&M’s, ice cream, and soda as his final meal, USA Today has reported.
