San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in Union Square on Saturday.

He is in stable condition after the suspect, a 17-year-old male, attempted an armed robbery, leading to a struggle in which both Pearsall and the suspect were shot.

Police confirmed there was no indication Pearsall was targeted because of his status as an athlete. The suspect was taken into custody, the San Francisco Gate has reported.

Pearsall, recently drafted by the 49ers, was released from the hospital and is expected to recover. The District Attorney’s office plans to file charges in juvenile court this week.
