A mountain lion attacked a 5-year-old boy at Malibu Creek State Park in Southern California over the holiday weekend.
The child was playing near his family’s picnic table when the mountain lion pounced, but adults intervened, causing the animal to release him.
The boy was airlifted to a hospital with significant but non-life-threatening injuries and was released the next day.
The mountain lion climbed a tree and was later euthanized by state rangers who deemed it a threat, the Associated Press has reported.
Such attacks are rare, with only about 20 confirmed cases in California in over a century.
