The US has detected increased Russian military activity near key undersea cables, raising concerns that Russia may be planning sabotage operations against critical global communications infrastructure, according to US officials.
Russia has bolstered a specialized military unit, GUGI, which operates surface ships, submarines, and naval drones to enhance its undersea sabotage capabilities.
US officials are particularly worried about the heightened presence of Russian naval forces near vital maritime infrastructure, CNN has reported.
These undersea cables, crucial for global internet, telecommunications, and power transmission, are vulnerable targets that, if disrupted, could severely impact communications, financial markets, and energy supplies.
