Venezuelan opposition leader Gonzalez lands in Spain seeking asylum after disputed election

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez arrived in Madrid on Sunday, fleeing an arrest warrant for terrorism and conspiracy related to July’s contested presidential election.

Gonzalez, now seeking asylum in Spain, had been staying at the Spanish embassy in Caracas after leaving the Dutch embassy, where he had taken refuge from late July until early September.

The Venezuelan government allowed his departure to ease political tensions.

The election, which declared incumbent Nicolas Maduro the winner, was widely disputed, leading to protests and arrests, CNN has reported.

Spanish and Dutch officials facilitated Gonzalez’s move to Spain, emphasizing support for his political rights.
