House Speaker Johnson pulls government funding bill after GOP support collapses

House Speaker Mike Johnson postponed a vote on a stopgap funding bill after over a dozen Republicans withdrew their support.

The bill aimed to fund the government for six months and included the SAVE Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration.

Congressional Democrats oppose any spending plan linked to the SAVE Act, likely blocking it in the Senate.

Former President Donald Trump has urged Republicans to attach the SAVE Act to the spending bill or consider a government shutdown, CNBC has reported.

Johnson plans to continue negotiations over the weekend.
