Rachele Mussolini, granddaughter of Italy’s wartime dictator Benito Mussolini, announced she is leaving Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party due to its right-wing stance and recent disagreements over minority rights.
Mussolini, a prominent city councillor in Rome, will join the more centrist Forza Italia group.
She cited her dissatisfaction with Brothers of Italy’s positions on civil rights and a recent dispute over gender issues as key reasons for her departure, Reuters has reported.
Forza Italia is seen as more liberal on civil rights while also upholding traditional Christian values.
