A massive manhunt for 32-year-old Joseph Couch, who allegedly opened fire on Interstate 75 in Kentucky and wounded five people, has entered its seventh day.
After sending threatening texts before the shooting, Couch remains at large in the rugged Daniel Boone National Forest, prompting school closures and warnings to residents to avoid outdoor activities.
Authorities are facing challenges navigating the forest’s treacherous terrain, which spans over 1,100 square miles.
The shooting occurred shortly after Couch claimed in a text that he would “try to kill a lot of people,” and he later expressed intentions to take his own life, CNN has reported.
While four of the victims have been released from the hospital and the fifth is expected to survive, there is a critical need for blood donations.
The incident has contributed to a troubling trend, with 389 mass shootings reported in the U.S. this year, averaging more than 1.5 daily.
The motive behind Couch’s rampage remains unknown.
