South Sudan postpones long-delayed election by two years, presidency says

The government of South Sudan has announced the postponement of its long-delayed national election until December 22, 2026, extending the transitional period by two years.

This decision, made under President Salva Kiir Mayardit, highlights ongoing challenges in the country’s fragile peace process following a 2018 agreement that ended a five-year civil war.

Although the conflict officially ended, violence among rival communities remains prevalent, Reuters has reported.

The elections were originally scheduled for December 2024, and the government emphasized the need for more time to complete essential tasks before holding the polls.
