Chipotle Mexican Grill tries out robots

Chipotle Mexican Grill is piloting two robots in California to assist with avocado prep for guacamole and the assembly of burrito bowls.

The Autocado robot can cut, core, and peel avocados in an average of 26 seconds, significantly reducing the time for guacamole preparation.

Although employees will still mash the avocados by hand, the automation is expected to ease the workload, particularly as Chipotle anticipates using 5.2 million cases of avocados this year.

The second robot, the Augmented Makeline, automates the assembly of bowls and salads, which account for 65% of the chain’s digital orders.

Chipotle seeks feedback on these technologies from employees and customers before considering their wider deployment, CBS News has reported.

Developed in partnership with tech firms Vebu and Hyphen, the robots aim to enhance operational efficiency while upholding Chipotle’s culinary standards.
