Democrats block Cruz attempt to pass GOP IVF bill

On Tuesday, Democrats blocked Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Katie Britt’s IVF Protection Act through unanimous consent, mirroring a similar dispute from June.

Cruz criticized the Democrats’ opposition as a “show vote,” accusing them of using the issue for political gain.

Sen. Patty Murray, a key sponsor of the Democratic Right to IVF Act, argued that the GOP bill fails to address major threats to IVF, such as state regulations and fetal personhood laws, The Hill has reported.

Both bills aimed to secure federal protection for IVF, but the GOP bill did not guarantee access and proposed withholding Medicaid funding from states that ban IVF.
