CERN ends cooperation with Russian scientists

CERN has announced it will end cooperation with up to 500 scientists from Russian institutions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the agreement not being renewed when it expires on November 30, 2024.

This decision will affect approximately 400 to 500 scientists linked to Russian laboratories, as well as about 15 Belarusian scientists.

A CERN spokesperson emphasized that supporting scientific research during wartime is unacceptable, marking this decision as a formalization of previously suspended activities.

Russian scientists can still participate at CERN if affiliated with non-Russian institutions, with around 90 currently doing so, Reuters has reported.

CERN collaborates with approximately 17,000 researchers worldwide.
