A former Kentucky sheriff, Shawn “Mickey” Stines, appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins, who was shot in his chambers.
Surveillance video, shown briefly in court, captured Stines shooting Mullins multiple times.
Stines’ defense argued he was under “extreme emotional disturbance” at the time, but prosecutors presented evidence suggesting a deliberate act.
Stines pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, CNN has reported.
The case now goes to a grand jury, with Stines facing a possible death penalty if convicted. Stines resigned as sheriff the day before the hearing.
