President Biden visited Florida and Georgia to survey the damage from Hurricane Helene and receive updates on the response efforts.
With over 200 deaths and many still missing across the Southeast, Biden emphasized that Congress must ensure the affected states have the resources needed for rebuilding, which will cost billions.
The federal government will cover all debris removal and emergency costs for up to six months in North Carolina and for 90 days in Florida and Georgia.
Biden, calling for unity in the crisis, said there are “no Democrats or Republicans, only Americans,” CBS News has reported.
He also announced the deployment of 1,000 soldiers to help with relief efforts and promised ongoing federal support.
