11 in Amish family, including 1-year-old, hospitalized after eating ‘toxic mushrooms’

Eleven members of an Amish family in Peach Bottom Township, Pennsylvania, were hospitalized Friday night after consuming toxic wild mushrooms.

A family member reported the incident, stating they fell ill after eating mushrooms found in the woods.

The report was made from a nearby telephone booth, as the family does not own a phone.

The affected individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 39, were treated at WellSpan York Hospital and released overnight.

Authorities emphasized the risks of mushroom poisonings, with misidentification being a common cause, CNN has reported.

In the U.S., approximately 6,000 cases of toxic mushroom ingestion occur annually, particularly among young children.
