Deadly Virus Brings New ‘Serious’ Threat to Ukraine

Ukraine faces a “serious” threat from West Nile virus, with nearly a dozen deaths in three months, according to Deputy Health Minister Ihor Kuzin.

The mosquito-borne virus has caused 88 cases and 11 deaths since July.

The virus spreads through mosquito bites after they feed on infected birds, which migrate through Ukraine.

Symptoms range from fever and headaches to more severe complications, and there is no vaccine or specific treatment, Newsweek has reported.

Experts advise protective measures like mosquito repellent and netting. The virus has been detected worldwide, with no cure available.
