French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remember that Israel was established through a United Nations resolution, emphasizing the importance of adhering to UN decisions.
This statement comes amid rising tensions between the two leaders, particularly following Macron’s call for a halt to weapon exports used by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon.
Macron highlighted the UN’s role in the creation of Israel, referencing the 1947 resolution that proposed partitioning Palestine into Jewish and Arab states.
His remarks were made during a cabinet meeting as Israel conducts a ground offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where UN peacekeepers, including French troops, are stationed, France 24 has reported.
Netanyahu, in response, requested the UN to reposition its peacekeeping forces, claiming they were being used as “human shields” by Hezbollah.
