Former President Donald Trump used his appearance at the 79th annual Al Smith dinner to launch a series of attacks on various political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
His remarks, which included a “nasty” joke about Harris’s husband, drew groans and boos from the audience.
Trump dismissed the backlash, asserting that his comments were factual rather than comedic.
He also reminisced about his controversial 2016 speech at the same event, claiming he had “gone overboard” but did not care about the reactions.
Throughout his nearly half-hour speech, Trump addressed his legal troubles and expressed sympathy for recently indicted New York Mayor Eric Adams, the USA Today has reported.
He concluded with a serious note, reflecting on the nation’s challenges and the appropriateness of humor given the circumstances. Former First Lady Melania Trump was also in attendance.
